In the summer of 2003, a team of seven teachers founded KIPP STAR College Prep Charter School with  90 fifth graders primarily from Harlem. In 2006-07, KIPP STAR grew to full size (grades 5-8) .  Every year since its inception, KIPP STAR has consistently outscored the District, City and State on New York State & National Assessments.

On the 2008-09 New York State exams, 98% of 8th graders scored proficient in math and 90% scored proficient in ELA. In addition, all KIPP STAR students participate in a wide arrange of enrichment activities including dance, African drumming, painting, slammin’ (which combines step, drumming, and poetry), and martial arts providing an opportunity for students to develop new skills and interests and to build the character strengths needed both in their academic classes as well as their lives outside the classroom.
