In July 2009, KIPP NYC College Prep opened its doors to its founding 9th grade class. For the first time, students from KIPP Academy, KIPP STAR, KIPP AMP, and KIPP Infinity middle schools joined to become one powerful team of KIPPsters, ready to take on the challenge and excitement of high school together. Over the course of four years, the high school will grow to serve nearly 800 KIPP NYC students and in 2013, we will watch with pride as our founding class graduates from high school with the knowledge, skills, and character to succeed in college, work, and life.

KIPP NYC College Prep is a free college-preparatory public school serving students from KIPP NYC’s four middle schools. KIPP NYC College Prep students will develop the knowledge, skills, and character needed to succeed in top-quality colleges and in the competitive world beyond. Some features of KIPP NYC College Prep include:

Extended School Hours:

  • While school hours for academic classes run from 8:15 to 3:30 each day, students are often at school by 7:30 for tutoring, club meetings, and extra help.  At 3:30, students begin their after-school activities, which range from football, dance, robotics, drama, volleyball to basketball, newspaper, slam poetry, and much more.

High Attendance Rates:

  • The average daily attendance is 97% at KIPP NYC College Prep.

College Preparatory Focus:

  • Students will complete four years of rigorous math, science, English, and social studies courses, and at least three years of a foreign language, with the opportunity to take honors and advanced placement courses in these subjects. Students will also complete a four year sequence of college prep classes comprised of Speech and Composition, Logic and Reasoning, College Counseling, and Senior Research Institute.  Their coursework will allow them to graduate with a College Prep Regents Diploma that signifies they are prepared for success at the college level.

Well Rounded Students:

  • Students have the opportunity to apply to a selective Honors program beginning in 9th grade.  The Honors level courses move at a quicker pace and prepare students for A.P. courses beginning as early as their sophomore year.
  • Our school also offers Special Education services including SETSS with a ratio of less than six to one.
  • Students enroll in a yearlong elective course in the arts their freshman year (music, art, or drama are currently offered, and additional courses will be offered each year as we grow).
  • Students who demonstrate success in academics and character participate in an annual year-end trip.

High Expectations for Students and Faculty:

  • Two hours of homework each night. Teachers are available for assistance by cell phone.
  • Weekly tests and quizzes designed to monitor students' progress and help teachers identify and address students’ areas of weakness, as well as prepare students for rigorous college entrance exams, including the Regents, Advanced Placement, PSAT, and SAT.
  • Frequent communication between school staff and students’ parents or guardians about how to support the school's efforts at home.

Comprehensive Student Support Services:

  • A four year advisory program that pairs a small group of students with one faculty member who meets weekly with them to guide them throughout their high school career and maintain their focus on academics and character.
  • A comprehensive counseling and academic intervention program to meet our students’ academic, social and emotional needs throughout high school.
  • A comprehensive college, internship and career guidance department to ensure that students receive the support they need throughout high school to meet their college and career goals.
A Focus on Teaching Quality:
  • Our teachers work to implement effective lessons that use a variety of activities to accomplish clearly defined aims and that take different learning styles into account.
  • Our staff is experienced, diverse, and talented.
